Mazda Show Off Latest Models At Frankfurt
Mazda today gave us a glimpse of the all new Mazda 6 due for UK launch later in 2007 and their all new Mazda 2 now on sale at a showroom near you.
Looking very much like the rumoured Lexus, the all new Mazda 6 is set to offer a more refined and sophisticated drive over the current model.
Surprisingly was the announcement of a new 2.5-litre petrol engine, given how hard it is to shift such beasts in the UK, developed from the previous 2.3-litre unit giving more torque, acceleration and 170PS to boot. Also enhanced 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol engines and the MZR-CD 2.0 turbo diesel, all carried over from the previous Mazda 6.
Being Mazda's best-selling car in Europe with more than 450,000 sales, the all new Mazda 6 is key to continuing success and early impressions indicate they have nothing to worry about at all.
All new Mazda 2
Also at Frankfurt is the all new Mazda 2, a car which is far more handsome, lighter and fuel efficient than it's predecessor. Going on sale in the UK at the weekend, the all new model offers a lower drag coefficient, Cd 0.31, plus a four percent smaller frontal area and reduced lift, which contributes to lower fuel consumption and increased high-speed stability.
The line features three new petrol engines comprising of a low and high powered 1.3 unit and a sporty 1.5, shortly followed by a 1.4 common rail diesel, as used in the outgoing model, but now more fuel-efficient and cheaper to operate. It produces 68ps of maximum power at 4,000rpm and maximum torque of 160Nm at a low 2,000rpm for quick responses to the throttle pedal.
Again with generous specification across the whole range, it looks like it's going to be another busy period for Mazda sales and 2008 looks to be promising indeed.
Mazda RX-8 – 40th Anniversary Limited Edition
Mazda also announced a new limited edition Mazda RX8 to celebrate 40 years of Rotary technology in their cars. The new limited edition will feature two specially designed exterior colours – a newly-developed Metropolitan grey that gives the RX-8’s sporty form a strong touch of sophistication; and Crystal White Pearl that will set it apart on British roads. These new colours are set against new 10-spoke, bright-grey 18-inch alloy wheels, new blue-light front fog lamps and a 40th anniversary emblem at the back of both front fenders.
The interior has several enhancements that celebrate the car’s premium look and feel. These include seat materials developed especially for this model in light grey Alcantara®in the centre and black leather at the sides, combined with special trim materials in matching colours. For an extra touch of quality, the steering wheel is black leather – to match the sides of the seats – with light stitching to match the colours of the seat centre panel. And the shift lever is covered in the same black leather with light stitching and features a silver shift knob centre.
