Is This The New Hyundai Amica?

According to a press release on Hyundai India's website, the company has exported 850 Santro Xing's which will be rebranded as the new Amica.

A statement on the website by HMI president, Mr BVR Subbu says: “Though this is HMI’s first consignment to the UK, our cars are already popular in other parts of the EU. In fact, Europe accounts for almost half of HMI’s total exports."

"The UK order is yet another endorsement of the consistently high quality standards, and global technology of our cars.”

Looking nothing like the recent spyshots that have been reported, the new Amica looks more like a rehash of the old model instead of the rumoured Picanto styled design.

If this is the best Hyundai can offer and the news is true, then i think the boat should turn around now or someone should at least try to sink it.

The reason I say if this is true is that something doesn't add up here, the website is quoting the Santro Xing as having a wheelbase of 3565mm where as the Picanto has a wheelbase of 3495mm, the same as the old Amica. And width and height don't match up either. So either Hyundai are playing a clever trick by trying to throw off the press, or those spyshots of the new Amica were false, and this really is coming to the UK.

Hyundai issued an embargo on its dealer network not to advertise or discuss with its customers about the up and coming Amica. So we'll just have to wait and see.

Land Owners Oppose Hyundai Car Plant

While Korean car giant Hyundai are on a global mission to become one of the world's biggest car makers, four land owners, including a farmer, are putting the skids on a £69 million car plant proposal around the industrial town of Nosovice Czechoslovakia.

The Prague Daily reports that local authorities have already approved the conditions of the buyout of land by Hyundai, but some of the locals, who claim their homes and land are part of their heritage, are having none of it.

The proposed buyout means that people would receive from CZK 3 million (£71,000) to CZK 6 million (£140,000) for a house and CZK 150 (£3.50) per a square metre of land as a compensation if Hyundai selects the locality for the plant's site.

Hyundai have other options in the pipeline but I guess some folk like things just the way they are. I bet they are popular with their neighbours (ouch).

End Of Strikes Boost Korean Output

Car production rose 22.8 percent in October from the previous month after strikes at Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia ended after two weeks.

Hyundai, South Korea's largest automaker, estimates a two-week strike by unionized workers that began on Aug. 25 cost 591 billion won in lost production. Kia estimates a strike that began on Aug. 29 and lasted about two weeks caused the company to forgo output worth 427 billion won.

Facelift Kia Sorento Arriving Early Summer 2006

Kia have told its 170 strong UK dealer network about up and coming models for 2006, some of which are still in the early stages of production.

One of those vehicles is the new facelift Kia Sorento, seen here on road test (see Autoweld), which has now been confirmed by Kia UK for May/June 2006 delivery.

Along with the new Sorento, Kia also announced delivery times for the all new Kia Magentis and Sedona, which will arrive in March & July 2006 respectively. However there was no mention of the new Kia Carens which is a shame.

But there is a problem! They have been told not to tell anybody and if they do they will be shot at dawn. Ok I made the shot at dawn piece up, but what's the point in that.

News travels fast in blogland and so it would be quite refreshing to hear of a car manufacturer keeping its dealers and customers up to speed as opposed to in the dark. Many dealers complain that their customers are more informed than they are, at times this causes confusion and embarrasment for all paties concerned.

Understandably a carmaker want's to keep its future plans under wraps until they are good and ready, but these day's that's virtually impossible. The worry is that they and the dealer network will get lumbered with a load of old models that customers won't want, which rarely happens anyway as price always dictates sales and customers love a bargain.

These day's most customers already know about up and coming models as the information is so easily accessible on the internet and via search engines, so hopefully Kia are setting an example by letting the dealers in on their plans early, so when a customer does enquire, the right information is given out in the proper way.

The way i see it is there are two choices:

a) Tell your dealer network nothing, issue an embargo on them and if they break it tell them they will be shot at dawn. Let a bystander, journalist or blogger take a snap shot of your secret new model whilst your test driver flogs it down a busy high street with tape and covers plastered all over it. Let your potential customers walk into a dealership with the pictures and have the dealership deny all knowledge, lose credibility and perhaps a sale.

b) Release the information to your network at the earliest possible time, thus avoiding any future problems.

Hmmm..might catch on and of course we will be more than happy to pass this new information around.

Kia Rio : Give It Time

I was reading an interesting article from the sunday herald and the writer talks about how the Kia Rio doesn't get a look in on the latest European Car Of The Year 2006 Awards.

This year's award went to the Renault Clio in which the writer sympathises with Kia as he believe's there's "little to choose" between the two cars.

Of course this isn't true. Renault are steeped in history, are in F1 and the Clio is a well established thoroughbred in European terms. But on the world stage it's a different matter and this is where Kia are building on their global success, with a view to making a real impact in Europe. Evidence of this impact comes in the form of the Kia Picanto which is already establishing itself as a favourite amongst super-mini fans.

The Kia Rio diesel costing a mere £7995 against the Clio diesel's £12,350 is a huge price to pay for vanity, although it still goes to show how much work Kia need to do in the PR department. It also illustrates how much image holds sway over the car buying public. Folly but true never-the-less.

So give it time and Kia will come to the European masses in the end, as this is a very good car regardless of its bargain price.

Besides it was always going to be a difficult task for a car like the new Rio to win any annual award considering its only into a two month launch. Let's see what happens next year.

Skill World Cup Qualifiers In The UK

Kia Press Release
Source Kia

Kia’s top 10 UK technicians will have their knowledge and abilities put to the test next week when they look to win a place in the Skill World Cup in South Korea.

The top 10 have been chosen from more than 500 Kia technicians up and down the country who entered the national competition.

The winner of the UK final, being held on November 30th at Kia Motors (UK) Ltd’s Technical and Training Centre in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, will go through to represent the UK in the finals in Seoul early next year where they will compete against technicians from all over the world.

Kevin Todd, Customer Support & Service Development Manager for Kia Motor (UK), said: “The finalists were chosen after an assessment which tested their fault finding, logic and diagnostic ability.

“In the final they will have 5 more exercises, this time working directly on vehicles. The competition is tough but there is huge enthusiasm for the event as shown by the number of entries we have had this year. It’s a great opportunity as well to go to South Korea, visit Kia’s car factories and experience Korean culture.”

The Skill World Cup has three categories – engine, chassis and electrical – in which technicians undergo practical tests to assess their ability to identify and repair problems on a test car plus a written examination.

Is Kia ED Cerato Replacement?

Recent spy shots have emerged showing an all new Kia - code named ED (European Design) out on road test.

Rumours are abound that this Kia spotted on the streets of Germany, is the replacement for the Kia Cerato, a car that has probably had the lowest profile launch of any car in the UK. In fact there was actually no official launch of the Cerato at all and probably explains why it never took off in the UK.

To add to the confusion, Kia went ahead and introduced the all new Kia Rio, a launch that had the Kia dealer network scratching its head and wondering what was happening next.

Looking a similar size to the Focus and Golf, the Kia ED is proof that the Korean carmaker means business and is not resting on its laurels. This seems to fit in nicely with the Korean firms ambitious plans, along with its Hyundai partners, to becoming one of the five largest car manufacturers in the world by 2010.

This car is typically European in its design, even with the wrappers over the front and rear and is a direct product of Kia's new R&D headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany.

The ED is planned to be built at the new Slovakian plant in Zilina, which is designed to produce 300,000 units a year. Production starting at the end of of 2006, first as four-door saloon and then followed by the hatchback.

Having a wheelbase of 2650mm the ED is longer than the Cerato and so should provide a roomy family car with generous levels of standard equipment. There are also rumours that by 2009, the new design could pave the way for a 2 door Coupé Cabrio with an electro-hydraulic powered hardtop.

The Kia ED will be available with a four-strong engine line-up including 1.6-litre and 2.0 petrol powerplants with 104bhp and 141bhp respectively, plus 100bhp 1.5-litre and 111bhp 2.0 diesels. and will be aiming to score 5 stars in the euro NCAP crash tests.

New Santa Fe Launched

Hyundai launched their all new Santa Fe in Korea today and it looks a beauty.

Looking slightly different to the spy shots seen over the previous months, though still a big improvement on the previous model.

150mm longer, 55mm wider and 50mm higher than its predecessor, a move which was necessary in order to give the similar sized Tucson its own breathing space. Wheelbase has also increased by 80mm giving it a new base length of 2700mm, putting it in the large SUV market alongside its Sorento stablemate.

At 4670mm in length, the new Santa Fe now has room for 7 seats. These never need to be taken out as they cleverly fold away leaving the rear surface flat.

The engine range, of which all details have been not yet released, should include a new common-rail diesel engine. This new unit should be around 2.2 litres and produce in the region of 150 ps with 335 Nm of torque.

The new engine will be mated to a new five speed gearbox, with the transmission regulated electronically. Just like the popular Tucson, this new Santa Fe will operate Hyundai's advanced four wheel drive system, allowing it to switch automatically between two wheel drive and the sure footedness of four wheel drive when necessary. A switch on the dashboard forces an equal partitioning between the front and rear axle. Also 2WD versions will be available.

The whole chassis has also been revised, in order to be able guarantee a higher comfort level. The wishbone framework is based on a McPherson system, along with multi-link suspension.

Safety hasn't been overlooked either with the usual twin airbags now being joined with lateral, side, and curtain airbags ensuring protection the full length of the vehicle, giving passengers on the third row more safety. The airbag for the first passenger can be eliminated when small children are placed in the front. Also active switches for the first seats are new addition equipment to the range, just like the three point seat-belt for middle the passenger on the second row.

Hyundai hope to sell plenty of the new Santa Fe's in 2006, 60,000 of those expected in Korea and there will be 150,000 to export. The versions for the European and American market will go into production this month. A UK launch date has not yet been set but should happen around March 2006.

Kia Sportage Climbs To The Top

Kia Press Release
Source Kia UK

The new Kia Sportage launched in January 2005 takes Kia back to the top of the compact SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) class that it helped to establish with the original model more than 10 years ago.

With the latest version, the Sportage has been given a totally new lease of life that makes it ideally suited to motoring in the 21st Century. Sportier, more elegant, more spacious and more adaptable, it is radically different to the original car. The name may be the same, but everything else is different.

The Sportage continues Kia’s drive to launch new models which are modern, stylish and technically sophisticated, while retaining the marque’s strong adherence to value for money. With prices starting from just £14,495, a choice of two trims: XE and XS and highly-competitive insurance ratings, Sportage makes SUV motoring available to buyers previously priced out by the high costs of ownership.

The line-up starts with a 140bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine with continuously variable valve timing. Flagship versions are powered by a silky 173bhp 2.7-litre V6 engine with four-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. But with diesel now the fuel of choice for the majority of cost-conscious SUV buyers, the 111bhp 2.0-litre common-rail turbodiesel is particularly attractive.

All models incorporate Kia’s sophisticated intelligent Four-Wheel drive system (Active Torque Transfer system), which progressively transfers drive from the front wheels to all four wheels if slippage is detected. In severe conditions, four-wheel drive can be engaged manually with a lock function to override the programme.

The Sportage chassis has fully independent suspension; rack and pinion steering and anti-lock disc brakes all round, with electronic brake force distribution for maximum stopping power. Traction control is fitted as standard equipment on the XE while the XS version also has ESP stability control.

Longer (4350 mm), wider (1800 mm) and higher (1695 mm) than the average small SUV, the five-door, five-seater Sportage offers much of the technical sophistication and stylish looks of Kia's popular Sorento, but in a smaller package.

It retains the user-friendly top-hinged tailgate of the original Sportage, but the spare wheel is now carried internally, making loading easier and lowering the centre of gravity to improve handling. The glass screen opens independently of the tailgate, a major benefit when loading or unloading small items in confined spaces.

The rear seats have a unique ‘Drop & Fold’ one-touch system, which lowers the cushion and ensures the backrest folds fully flat to create a spacious, square-sided, flat-floored cargo area, more than 1.6 metres long. To accommodate even longer loads, the front passenger seat backrest folds forwards, lying flat on the cushion.

Interior space is best-in-class, with the largest capacity, front row legroom and second row leg and headroom.

Sportage is also big on passive safety features, with twin front airbags, front side and full-length curtain airbags, front seat-belt pre-tensioners with load limiters and three three-point rear seat belts.

The generous standard specification includes 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, a JVC CD audio with MP3 player, electric windows and door mirrors, front fog lamps, auto light control, remote central locking, tilt steering column adjustment, roof rails, a sunglasses holder and a wide range of handy storage areas.

XS versions add leather trim, front seat warmers, climate control, cruise control, privacy glass, electric tilt and slide sunroof and six instead of four speakers.

Facelift Getz Residual Values

Staying on the Hyundai Getz theme for the time being, CAP Data has just released residual values for the facelift Getz.

It's interesting to see how well they hold up against the competition as the pre-conception has always been that Hyundai cars don't hold their values as well as the European and mainstream Japanese models. Hmmm...so fans of the used Toyota Yaris are not going to be pleased to see that the Getz retained a higher value after 60,000 miles and 36 mths, according to this latest report.

The pre-facelift Getz models were always on a par value-wise with the rest of the pack, but since the decision was made to upgrade and smarten up the appearance, the new model seems to be setting the standard.

Here are the latest values for the new Getz range from CAP Data (based on 60,000 miles and 36mths):
  • 1.1 GSi 3dr - 32%
  • 1.1 CDX 5dr - 34%
  • 1.4 GSi 3dr - 31%
  • 1.4 CDX 5dr - 32%
  • 1.5 CRTD GSi 5dr - 31%
  • 1.5 CRTD CDX+ 3dr - 31%
I think what is suprising here is that all the above retain values above 30% which is the industry benchmark. Overall it's an improvement of around 4% when comparing against the previous model. It also illustrates how the Korean giants are establishing themselves firmly in the European market place and with product improvements ongoing, look set to continue this trend.

These values are only coming about because the cars must be commanding higher values at auction, which is where CAP (Current Auction Price) get their data. So there's clearly a fairly strong market place for second hand Hyundai Getz models, which is always good news for any car maker.

Here are the some of the competitors values as published by CAP Data for the same period.
  • Citroen C3 1.4 SX 5dr - 28%
  • Fiat Punto 1.2 Active Sport 3dr - 27%
  • Fiat Punto 1.3 Multijet Dynamic 5dr - 26%
  • Mitsubishi 1.3 Colt Equippe 3dr - 34%
  • Nissan Micra 1.2 S 3dr - 27%
  • Nissan Micra 1.4 SE 5dr - 27%
  • Peugeot 206 1.1 S 5dr - 28%
  • Peugeot 206 1.6 16v SE 5dr - 27%
  • Renault Clio 1.5 dCi 65 Expression 5dr - 28%
  • Suzuki Swift 1.3 GL 3dr - 21%
  • Toyota Yaris 1.0 T3 3dr - 30%
  • Toyota Yaris 1.3 T Spirit 5dr - 29%
  • Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 i 16v Design 3dr - 25%
  • Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTi SXi 5dr - 26%
So the report covers a fairly comprehensive list of cars although i was disapointed not to see Ford and Kia on there. Especially the Picanto being a stablemate of the Getz and the Korean partners meteoric rise in vehicle sales this year.

Hyundai Getz Review

Although the smallest car in the Hyundai range, the Getz has certainly grown up a lot since the first models appeared in Oct 2002. Sporting a neater front grille and wrap around headlamps, this supermini has a cleaner and sportier appearance.

Add to that new wheel trims, alloy wheels and rear lights, the Getz has had an effective makeover which will make it more appealing to a wider market.

The interior has also had a few tweaks with new duotone fascia and redesigned instrument panels.

If the Getz has moved on visually, it's the same progress on the engine front, where it gets a smoother, livelier and more refined 1.1 litre petrol engine. There's also a willing 1.4 petrol to replace the old 1.3-litre, which is good for 100mph-plus and still returns 47mpg.

But the best news of all is the introduction of a 1.5-litre turbo charged diesel in a choice of either 87bhp or 109bhp. The less powerful of the two will certainly appeal to those seeking value as it qualifies for Band D road fund licence at just £85. If you want the fun factor go for the more powerful version which is genuinely quick, quiet and cuts trips to the pumps to a mininum with more than 60mpg.

Ride, handling and the gear change are now all well up with European rivals. The only minor criticism was the front seat comfort due to a minimal base and the steering on diesel models which felt a bit dead at low speeds.

And of course in typical Hyundai fashion, equipment levels are very generous indeed with the inclusion of air conditioning (excludes SE), making it the first and only supermini to have this fitted as standard across an entire range. There's also electric windows, central locking, Radio/CD, power steering and ABS, even on the basic model too.

Throw in the industry leading five-year unlimited mileage warranty and three years' free servicing (excludes SE), and you have all the ingredients for affordable trouble-free motoring.

Prices start at only £6995 for the 1.1 Special Edition, while the 1.4-litre is very competitive at only £7995.

Hyundai Launch New Getz Special Edition

Hyundai Press Release
Source Hyundai UK

  • Based on 1.1 GSi 3dr
  • No Air Conditioning
  • Two new unique interior colours
  • A Special Edition badge
  • The 1.1 SE (3dr) priced at £6995 otr
  • Insurance group 3A
Swiftly on the back of the recent facelift Hyundai Getz launch, a new Special Edition has been introduced into the model line up aptly named the SE.

Rarely do car makers release limited editions so early into a new car launch but Hyundai claim it is in response to consumer needs and competitor activity.

As Hyundai themselves put it, the new SE is 'designed to attract a new consumer base to the Getz and to the Hyundai brand in particular a younger audience'. Ok with that out of the way, let's have a look at the specification.

The SE will be based on the entry level 1.1 GSi 3dr and be available with two new unique interior colours - Hip Hop Red (solid) with Red Interior Trim and Ebony Black (solid) with a Blue Interior Trim. Air conditioning is dropped to keep the price point below £7,000 and the car will feature a Special Edition badge.

Priced at £6995 OTR the SE doesn't qualify for consumer offers such as 3 yrs Free servicing. Also bear in mind that for £500 more, you may as well go for the 1.1 GSi as the model qualifies for the servicing offer (worth £380) as well as air conditioning. So it would seem that Hyundai want to offer a competitive price point to keep the new Hyundai Getz in-line with competition and allow dealers up-sell to the basic model.

Note* Auto community will be publishing a recent Hyundai Getz review later in the week as well as our first Hyundai Getz road test.

New Mazda MX5 On Sale At Dealerships Now

Mazda Press Release
Source Mazda UK
11 November 2005

The all-new Mazda MX-5 range offers customers a five-strong model line‑up with a choice of three powertrains (1.8i or 2.0i with 5-speed gearbox, 2.0i with 6-speed gearbox), and three equipment levels (Standard, Option Pack and Sport). On display in dealer showrooms since mid October, the third-generation MX‑5 officially went on sale from 1 November.

The new Mazda MX-5 has achieved a near-impossible task, it is even better than the iconic model it replaces, while staying true to the spirit of the original cult car. Bigger, better engines deliver more power and better fuel economy, with reduced CO 2 outputs. Longer, wider and taller (by 20, 40 and 20 mm respectively) the new MX-5 weighs only a few kilos more than the previous model, despite more generous standard equipment and enhanced primary and secondary safety.

During 2006, sales of the new Mazda MX-5 are expected to reach more than 8,500 units, of which 2,800 are predicted to be fleet sales, and to maintain a similar level through 2007. The new model – with its athletic and aggressive body lines, larger alloy wheels, more powerful engines and twin exhausts – is proving to have a greater appeal for men with 60 per cent of preorder website sales to male customers, and this initial ratio (60/40 male/female) is expected to continue.

A choice of five body colours will be available – two micas (Galaxy Grey and Winning Blue), one metallic (Sunlight Silver) and two solids (Brilliant Black and True Red). Stylish 16-inch 5‑spoke (available on 1.8 and 2.0 models) and 17-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels are available (standard on 2.0 Sport models).

Further confirmation of the new Mazda MX-5’s enhanced popularity was the high demand for the sixth model in the initial line-up, the special introductory model, the 2.0i Special Launch Edition, which was available on the preorder website from August. The strictly limited run of 300 units of these Velocity Red, 2.0i Sport-based models for the UK market – each individually numbered – was entirely sold out by mid-October.

Evolution with the athletic build of a true sports
car

The most successful open two-seater sports car of all time, the new Mazda MX-5 is still an affordable, fun to drive roadster with harmonious proportions and no unnecessary frills – still clearly recognisable as a Mazda MX-5. However, the new Mazda MX-5 has the athletic build of a true sports car.

Mazda designers renounced the “cola bottle waist” of both previous models while increasing the car’s width and giving the fenders a more prominent design. The vehicle’s low, flowing side sills, a slightly wedged shape profile and a body that tapers slightly inwards at the front and back – are retained. Thus the new Mazda MX-5 is a “synthesis of modernity and tradition,” as MX-5’s Chief Designer, Yasushi Nakamuta, defined it.

The wider cockpit has more hip, shoulder and elbow room, and space to fit side airbags for the first time. Thanks to the 65 mm longer wheelbase (2,330 mm), people as tall as 1.86 m can comfortably fit into the car – previously, it was a bit cramped for people over 1.80 m.

The soft top is made of high quality material and can be opened and closed by using a centrally-placed latch in just six seconds and using only one hand. The Z-fold soft top, when completely folded back, sits flush with the boot lid, which does away with the need for a tonneau cover. And you don’t even have to get out of the car to open or close the top.

For the inside, MX-5 designers sought to create a higher quality feel, as well as combining new materials. Mazda MX-5’s solid quality finish is achieved by using decorative piano black embellishments and quality detailing on features such as the driving instruments, whose needles seem to twitch in anticipation of the driving enjoyment to come, when the car’s ignition is switched on.

The ventilation system uses additional air vents on the centre stack and in the foot well, to extend Mazda MX-5’s open-air driving season considerably. Now you can drive the new Mazda MX-5 comfortably in air temperatures from 10 to 30 ° C. Quarter windows placed at the bottoms of the A-pillars, along with a new, more efficient aero board wind‑blocker, make driving with the top down even more comfortable.

Mazda MX-5’s new interior has more practical storage compartments and the larger boot can now hold beverage cases, containing 12 1.5-litre bottles, carried upright.

Competitive ownership costs

Thanks to the excellent levels of security, including Thatcham 1 alarm and immobiliser (standard on all derivatives), together with the modest overall costs of service, maintenance and repair – which remains at a similar level to the outgoing models – the insurance groups for the all‑new MX-5 remain equally competitive in the non‑premium S segment, ranging from 11E to 13E.

Meanwhile, residual value experts say used car values at three years/60,000 miles on the new MX-5 will be in line with those more frequently associated with premium badge marques because demand in the used car market for the two-seater continues to be enormous. Figures from CAP Motor Research range from the Mazda MX-5 retaining 43 per cent of its P11d value for the flagship model to 47 per cent for the entry-level 1.8i derivative at three years/60,000 miles.

2006 Hyundai Accent

Hyundai Motors America revealed their all new 2006 Hyundai Accent Coupe 3dr to crowds at the 2005 Sema Motor Show.

The new 2006 Hyundai Accent was originally introduced during a press conference at the New York International Automobile Show on March 24, 2005.

The car has undergone a complete re-design from the previous model and should reach UK shores early 2006. As well as a new look, the 2006 Accent bristles with safety features, something the previous model lacked by today's standards.

6 standard airbags (front, front side-impact and side-curtain), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution, front seatbelt pre-tensioners, adjustable head restraints for all passengers and an optional remote keyless entry system with panic feature are just some of the safety features incorporated into the new design.

Hyundai claim that the new Hyundai Accent engine is the most powerful in its class, offering a range topping 1.6 DOHC, 16-valve inline 4-cylinder engine with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) which produces 110 bhp @ 6,000 rpm as well as 106 lb-ft of torque @ 4,500 rpm.

The current Hyundai Accent in the UK uses this engine as well as a 1.3 DOHC unit, but that is likely to be replaced with a new 1.4 version which is can now be found in the facelift Hyundai Getz.

Slightly longer, wider and higher and with 50mm added to the wheelbase, Hyundai claim the new Accent boast's class leading interior space and improved road holding. However these extra safety features and interior space do come with a weight penalty as the car is approx 84 lbs (38kg) heavier than the current model.

In the US Hyundai are also launching the car with more than 35 Accent accessories at launch including a ground effects kit, cold air intake system, Kenwood MP3 satellite-ready radio, aluminum pedals and doorsills, iPod holder, chrome exhaust tip amongst others.

Expect prices to be competitive as usually with the models starting at around £8000.

New SEAT Leon 2.0 TFSi

Seat Press Release
Source Seat UK

Seat are launching their most powerful Leon to date in the all new TFSi Turbo.

Boasting an all new 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine with a potent 185 PS on tap, this Leon TSFi bolsters SEAT's reputation for building attainable performance cars.

Going from stand still to 62 mph in 7.8 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 137 mph, this awesome Leon doesn't require the driver to push the engine to the red line or make frenzied gear changes in order to experience strong acceleration – with 270 Nm (199 lb ft) of torque available from 1800 to 5000 rpm, flexibility is a key characteristic of this advanced new engine.

Available in one trim level - Sport - the 2.0 TSFi will retail for £15,995 and have a high standard specification including: 2 Zone climate control, front fog lights, CD player with eight speakers, front and rear electric windows, tinted windows, twin exhaust pipes and cruise control. Safety highlights comprise six airbags (driver, front passenger, front-seat side and curtain), tyre pressure monitoring, ISOFIX child seat anchorage, ABS and ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme).

Available to order now from Seat dealers, this Seat Leon will add further momentum to the strong initial sales performance of this new model range, which is being mirrored across Europe; in the Spanish market in particular, demand for the new Leon is exceeding all expectations.

Mitsubishi & Toyota Take Action Over Grey Imports

The importing of vehicles by independant dealers (grey imports) has always been a sensitive issue for manufacturers, franchised dealers and consumers alike.

Now it looks like the Office of Fair Trading have been asked by these independants, to see whether they can stop carmakers from banning these grey imports coming into the UK.

So far Mitsubishi & Toyota have threatened to take legal action to stop these independants from selling cars imported from outside the EU. Cheap versions of pick-ups and cars are coming in from markets such as Japan and Thailand.

Mitsubishi has already forced one UK trader to return several pick-ups to Thailand as part of an out-of-court settlement and is confident European trademark law supported its position. Toyota has also written to importers demanding they stop.

Now the British Independant Motor Trade Association is in talks with the OFT about competition law. It believes Mitsubishi is abusing its position as an official importer. "Mitsubishi's tactics will not go down at all well with the British public and the company is putting its reputation at serious risk," says Richard Moore, general secretary.

Customer Protection

Actually it's because of reputation that the manufacturers are taking action. Mitsubishi says it's determined to protect its customers being mis-sold products. "Customers may be misled about the origins and standards of vehicles which they purchase from non-franchised dealers," says Jim Tyrrell, managing director of Mitsubishi UK. Toyota says that the latest Hilux was imported from Thailand before it went on UK sale last month.

Like For Like (Our View)

While these independants have a right to make a profit, customers have a right to know what they are buying. Manufacturers own the right to protect their reputations, its dealer network and most importantly its brand. We feel it is precisely for this reason that likes of Mitsubishi & Toyota would want to stop these independants in the first place. Franchised dealers invest heavily in providing top notch facilities where as some independants sell off their own door steps with little support or loyalty to the customer.

Consumers need to be sure they are getting value for money and where a franchised dealer is competing against an independant, they are getting a vehicle that is like for like. Is the specification the same? Is the warranty still valid? This is where the situation becomes complex and is mis-leading because an independant may be selling a vehicle which has sat in a field in Thailand for 2 yrs, be out of warranty in the UK and therefor will have an adjusted price advantage over the latest UK model. And is the customer aware of exactly what they are buying? In most cases its unlikely.

Franchised dealers have to invest in training, showrooms and aftersales facilities and meet up to high standards set out by the manufacturer in order to sell their products. This is the only way a manufacturer can protect its brand, customers and reputation in a more measured way.

The UK car market is largely based on the customer being able to part exchange their own car in order to offset the price of a new one. The market place for a second hand grey import from Thailand would be vastly smaller than one bought and serviced in the UK, this inturn would have an effect on its value. Franchised dealers are more regulated and tend to stay away from grey imports due to history and warranty issue's and its just not worth the aggrevation in the end. There may be a market for a grey import in the private sector, but its price would have to reflect its history and most people would have a part-exchange to off load anyway. It's also an unregulated market place where the customer has little or no protection. Besides, a grey import which had a £2000 price advantage over the latest UK model, would be worth at least £2000 less when part exchanged and so the customers no better off financially and all of a sudden is faced with the hassle trying to sell it.

And so it's back to the independant dealer who won't even invest in the franchise and aftersales facilities in the first place, so they are hardly going to re-invest in the customer or part exchange in the long term. And if they do, you can bet it will be on their own terms and not the value's set out by the industry which is there to protect them.
