Is Kia ED Cerato Replacement?
Recent spy shots have emerged showing an all new Kia - code named ED (European Design) out on road test.
Rumours are abound that this Kia spotted on the streets of Germany, is the replacement for the Kia Cerato, a car that has probably had the lowest profile launch of any car in the UK. In fact there was actually no official launch of the Cerato at all and probably explains why it never took off in the UK.
To add to the confusion, Kia went ahead and introduced the all new Kia Rio, a launch that had the Kia dealer network scratching its head and wondering what was happening next.
Looking a similar size to the Focus and Golf, the Kia ED is proof that the Korean carmaker means business and is not resting on its laurels. This seems to fit in nicely with the Korean firms ambitious plans, along with its Hyundai partners, to becoming one of the five largest car manufacturers in the world by 2010.
This car is typically European in its design, even with the wrappers over the front and rear and is a direct product of Kia's new R&D headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany.
The ED is planned to be built at the new Slovakian plant in Zilina, which is designed to produce 300,000 units a year. Production starting at the end of of 2006, first as four-door saloon and then followed by the hatchback.
Having a wheelbase of 2650mm the ED is longer than the Cerato and so should provide a roomy family car with generous levels of standard equipment. There are also rumours that by 2009, the new design could pave the way for a 2 door Coupé Cabrio with an electro-hydraulic powered hardtop.
The Kia ED will be available with a four-strong engine line-up including 1.6-litre and 2.0 petrol powerplants with 104bhp and 141bhp respectively, plus 100bhp 1.5-litre and 111bhp 2.0 diesels. and will be aiming to score 5 stars in the euro NCAP crash tests.
